This Pedestrian Safety Online Training Program is designed for employers, contractors, and agencies who want to enhance their forklift training programs and train their workers, visitors, and any employees who work around forklifts, mobile equipment, and vehicle traffic.
Who This Training Is For
Training forklift operators alone can’t eliminate all forklift, mobile equipment, and traffic hazards. Forklift safety also applies to all employees who work near forklifts and where mobile equipment or vehicles operate. This pedestrian safety training course is intended for:
- Warehouse, production, and facility staff who work in areas where forklifts and other mobile equipment operate.
- Construction and site personnel working near telehandlers, heavy equipment, delivery vehicles, and moving loads.
- Roadway and utility crews exposed to live traffic, including flaggers, inspectors, and maintenance workers.
- Office staff, supervisors, and visitors who enter operational areas where forklifts and other equipment are in use.
- Contractors and temp workers who need documented pedestrian safety training before being permitted on site.
- Employers pairing pedestrian training with forklift operator training to cover both the operator and the workers around them.
- Employers standardizing pedestrian safety training across multiple sites or shifts.
- Organizations who need to integrate SCORM pedestrian safety training into their internal learning management system (LMS).
The pedestrian safety online training is designed to build the hazard recognition and decision-making skills workers on foot need to stay safe around mobile equipment and vehicle traffic.
Organized into four progressive modules, the program builds from pedestrian hazard recognition and body positioning through the specific risks posed by each equipment type, and on to the traffic management, visibility, and communication controls that keep pedestrians and equipment separated.
Each module concludes with a quiz to confirm comprehension before trainees advance to the next module.

There is no single OSHA standard for pedestrian safety. The requirements come from the equipment standards that govern the machines pedestrians work around, combined with the General Duty Clause, which requires employers to protect workers from recognized hazards. These standards include:
- OSH Act Section 5(a)(1) – General Duty Clause, requiring a workplace free from recognized hazards. This is the provision OSHA cites for pedestrian and vehicle hazards that no specific standard addresses.
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176(a) – Aisles and passageways, including safe clearances where mechanical handling equipment is used
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 – Powered Industrial Trucks, including right of way and pedestrian provisions
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.67 and 1926.453 – Vehicle-mounted elevating and rotating work platforms
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179 – Overhead and Gantry Cranes
- OSHA 29 CFR 1926.601 and 1926.602 – Motor vehicles and material handling equipment on construction sites
- OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart G – Signs, Signals, and Barricades, including flagger requirements and reference to the MUTCD
- ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 – Safety Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks
- ANSI A92.22 and A92.24 – Safe use and training requirements for mobile elevating work platforms, including work zone and traffic control
- ASME B30.2 – Overhead and Gantry Cranes
- ANSI/ISEA 107 – High-Visibility Safety Apparel
Workplace-Specific Training
This course covers the general knowledge component of pedestrian safety. It does not replace the site-specific information workers need before entering an operational area, including your designated walkways and traffic routes, crossing and right-of-way rules, high-visibility apparel requirements, restricted zones, and equipment in use at that location. That portion must be delivered by the employer, since routes, hazards, policies, and procedures vary from site to site and employer to employer.
